The 2004 documentary Super Size Me gained almost instant cult-like following when director and lead character, Morgan Spurlock decided to try out food from the fast food industry, by eating a certain amount of fast food each day. Did you catch it?

Selecting McDonalds, as the largest fast food restaurant, Spurlock began the process of eating three McDonald square meals each day, for 30 days.

During this period, he took nothing else, including simple medicine, so this would not affect the results of the experiment.

After 30 days, he witnessed an increase in weight (more than 20Ibs.), found it difficult controlling his mood, became physically unhealthy, and on examination, doctors stated that he had too much fat in his liver.

Super Size Me has been criticized from various ends – the media, nutritionists, documentary film makers and McDonalds Fast Food. However, in spite of this criticism, the fast food chain dropped the supersize offer from the menu.

The above is a simple example of the disadvantages of eating poorly.

The BBC states that as much as 1 in 6 young people between the ages of 16 to 20 were consuming fast food twice a day, while the ratio for ages 21 to 34 was 1 in 8. This should be no surprise. As students’ activities and targets mount up each day, students might not feel inclined or take the time to prepare healthy meals.
